About Ike Delock
Ivan Martin “Ike” Delock, born November 11, 1929 in Highland Park, Michigan, was the son of Croatian immigrants and a Marine Corps veteran who began learning to pitch during his 1946-48 service, when his camp team had no one else who could. Signed by Red Sox scout Maurice DeLoof alongside his older brother Joe, he climbed Boston's farm system, headlined by a 20-4, 1.92-ERA season at Scranton in 1951, before debuting on April 17, 1952. Delock spent 11 seasons with the Red Sox (1952-53, 1955-63), working as both starter and reliever; he led the American League with 11 relief wins in 1956, earning the Boston Baseball Writers' Unsung Hero award, then won their Pitcher of the Year honor in 1958 after reeling off a 13-game winning streak. His best season came in 1959, when he went 11-6 with a 2.95 ERA. Released by Boston in June 1963, he closed his career with a brief stint in Baltimore, finishing 84-75 with 672 strikeouts. His 1960 Topps #336 captures him mid-career with the Red Sox pitching staff that anchored Fenway through the decade.
