About Carroll Hardy

Carroll William Hardy (1933-2020), born in Sturgis, South Dakota, was a rare two-sport pro: a 1955 third-round NFL pick who played halfback for the San Francisco 49ers before turning to baseball. An All-Conference standout in three sports at the University of Colorado, he broke in with Cleveland in 1958 after two seasons with the Pacific Coast League's San Diego Padres. Card #341 shows Hardy as an Indians reserve outfielder, but by the time it reached shelves in 1960 he had already been dealt to Boston on June 13, with catcher Russ Nixon, for Ted Bowsfield and Marty Keough. That trade set up his signature footnote: on September 20, 1960, he finished an at-bat for an injured Ted Williams, becoming the only man ever to pinch-hit for the Splendid Splinter - and, the next year, for rookie Carl Yastrzemski, Williams's eventual successor in left field. Hardy later played for Houston and Minnesota, closing an eight-year career at .225 with 17 home runs, then spent 23 years in the Denver Broncos' front office, including their Super Bowl XII run.
