About Jim Gentile
James Edward Gentile signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1952, but with Gil Hodges entrenched at first base he spent eight years buried in the minors, twice leading a league in home runs, before Baltimore acquired him in October 1959. Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella had already tagged him "Diamond Jim," calling him a diamond in the rough. Handed the Orioles' first-base job in 1960, Gentile made both All-Star Games as a rookie, then broke out in 1961: a .302 average, a career-high 46 home runs, and 141 RBIs, third in AL MVP voting behind Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. On May 9 he hit grand slams in consecutive innings against Minnesota, part of a five-slam season that set an AL record standing until 1987; a scoring correction decades later to Maris's RBI total earned Gentile a belated $5,000 bonus for a share of the 1961 RBI title. A six-time All-Star and 1989 Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame inductee, he closed his career with the Athletics, Astros, and Indians before a final season in Japan. His 1960 Topps card, issued the year he broke through in Baltimore, ranks among the set's key rookie cards.
