About Lee Walls
Raymond Lee Walls Jr. signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in February 1951, scouted by Howie Haak, and was the California League's Rookie of the Year that year with the Class C Modesto Reds. He debuted with Pittsburgh on April 21, 1952, but did not stick in the majors until 1956, batting .274 with 11 triples. Traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1957, Walls hit for the cycle against Cincinnati that July, then broke out in 1958 with career highs of .304, 24 home runs and 72 RBIs, earning his only All-Star selection. The Cubs sent him to Cincinnati that December, and his 1960 Topps card #506 catches him mid-transition: he started 23 of 29 games for the Reds before Cincinnati shipped him to Philadelphia that June. Walls closed his ten-year career with the 1963 champion Los Angeles Dodgers, then played a season in Japan with the Hankyu Braves. Nicknamed "Captain Midnight" for the eyeglasses he wore on the field, a rarity in his era, he finished with a .262 average, 66 home runs and 284 RBIs.
