1960 Topps #507 Dick Stigman

About Dick Stigman
Richard Lewis Stigman was a hard-throwing left-hander from tiny Nimrod, Minnesota, discovered by Cleveland scout Cy Slapnicka three days after Stigman's 1954 high school graduation, after he fired a 21-strikeout perfect game for his hometown team. He debuted with the Indians on April 22, 1960, and despite a modest first-half record was tabbed for the American League All-Star squad by manager Al López, though he never appeared in either game that year. Before the 1962 season he was traded to his home-state Twins for pitcher Pedro Ramos, and blossomed there: 12-5 in 1962, then 15-15 with a career-best 3.25 ERA and three shutouts across 33 starts in 1963. A rough 1964 cost him his rotation spot, but working mostly in relief in 1965 he helped Minnesota win its first American League pennant, though he did not pitch in that year's World Series. Traded to Boston in 1966, he closed out a seven-year, 46-54 career with 755 strikeouts. His 1960 Topps card, #507, sits in the short-printed high-number series (#507-572), making it a scarcer find from his rookie year.
