About Billy Consolo
Billy Consolo signed with the Boston Red Sox for a reported $60,000 bonus straight out of Los Angeles' Dorsey High School in February 1953 and made his major-league debut that April without ever playing a minor-league game. He spent six-plus seasons in Boston as a reserve infielder, posting his best mark in 1957 at .270 in 68 games. On June 11, 1959, the Red Sox traded him to the Washington Senators for infielder Herb Plews, and Consolo became Washington's primary shortstop, playing 79 games that season. That stint with the Senators is captured on his 1960 Topps card, number 508, part of the scarce short-printed high-number series (#507-572). He closed out a ten-year career in 1962 after brief stops with the Twins, Phillies, Angels, and Athletics, finishing with a .221 average, 260 hits, and 83 RBI over 603 games. Consolo later spent 15 seasons as bench coach for the Detroit Tigers under childhood friend Sparky Anderson, including the club's 1984 World Series championship.
