1960 Topps #509 Tommy Davis
Tommy Davis's rookie card — two NL batting titles were four years away.

About Tommy Davis
Herman Thomas Davis Jr. grew up playing ball in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, where a phone call from Jackie Robinson convinced the teenage star to sign with the Dodgers over the Yankees. He won batting titles at Class D Kokomo and Triple-A Spokane before making the Los Angeles roster for good in 1960, batting .276 in a rookie season now pictured on his short-printed high-number card. Davis broke out in 1962, hitting .346 with a league-leading 230 hits and a franchise-record 153 RBI, then repeated as NL batting champion in 1963 while batting .400 as the Dodgers swept the Yankees in the World Series. A shattered, dislocated ankle sliding into second base on May 1, 1965, ended his run as one of the National League's most productive hitters; he played on for a decade more, ten teams in all, finishing as Baltimore's Outstanding Designated Hitter in 1974. Davis was never enshrined in Cooperstown, but his back-to-back batting crowns remain unmatched by any Dodger since — a lofty finish for a card that, in 1960, only hinted at what was coming.
