About Jerry Staley
Gerald "Jerry" Staley broke into pro ball in 1941 with Boise of the Class C Pioneer League, winning 22 games as a rookie, then went 20-10 the next year before three seasons in the Army's Medical Corps during World War II, much of it in the South Pacific. St. Louis landed him as compensation when a minor-league affiliate went independent, and he debuted with the Cardinals in 1947. Working as a starter through the early 1950s, the sinkerballer won 19, 17 and 18 games from 1951 to 1953 and earned back-to-back National League All-Star selections. After a 1955 trade, Staley reinvented himself as a bullpen ace with the White Sox, leading the American League in games and games finished in 1959 and firing the sinker that started the double play clinching Chicago's first pennant in 40 years. He returned to the All-Star Game in 1960, the season pictured on this short-printed high number, and retired after 1961 with a 134-111 record, a 3.70 ERA and 61 saves across 15 big-league seasons.
