About this card

Cards #553-572 close the set as the Sport Magazine All-Star run, and they sit inside the scarce high-number series - which is why they are the hardest twenty cards in the set to finish.

About Mickey Mantle

Mickey Mantle grew up in Commerce, Oklahoma, groomed by his father from childhood to switch-hit. Yankees scout Tom Greenwade signed him in 1949, and he broke into pro ball as a shortstop with the Class D Independence Yankees before moving to the outfield. He debuted with New York in 1951 and, after Joe DiMaggio's retirement, took over center field in 1952 for thirteen seasons. His 1956 season remains one of the greatest ever: he won the Triple Crown, batting .353 with 52 home runs and 130 RBI — the only switch-hitter to do so — and captured the first of three AL MVP awards. A 20-time All-Star, he helped the Yankees to seven championships in twelve World Series, setting Series records for home runs (18), RBI (40), and runs (42) that still stand. He finished with 536 home runs, the only player ever to hit 150 from each side of the plate, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1974 on the first ballot. Known as "the Commerce Comet" for his hometown and speed, he remains the defining Yankee of the era. His 1960 Topps #350, the dual-image horizontal design worn only once besides 1956, is the crown jewel of the set; card #563, from the short-printed high-number Sport Magazine All-Star subset, is his third and scarcest card in the release.
