About Orlando Cepeda

Orlando Cepeda signed with the New York Giants organization out of Puerto Rico in 1955, following a tryout arranged by Santurce Crabbers owner Pete Zorilla, and broke into pro ball with Class D Sandersville before rocketing through the minors. He debuted with the newly relocated San Francisco Giants in 1958 and won NL Rookie of the Year by unanimous vote, launching a run as one of the National League's most feared first basemen through the 1960s. In 1961 he led the league with 46 home runs and 142 RBIs, and in 1967, after a trade to St. Louis, he won the NL MVP award unanimously and helped the Cardinals win the World Series. He later starred for the Atlanta Braves' 1969 division champions and became MLB's first Outstanding Designated Hitter with Boston in 1973. An 11-time All-Star, Cepeda carried the nickname "the Baby Bull," inherited from his father, Pedro "Perucho" Cepeda, a Puerto Rican baseball legend known as "the Bull." Elected by the Veterans Committee, Cepeda entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. This 1960 Topps card, #450, pictures him early in his Giants career, already building the résumé that would land him in Cooperstown.
