About Curt Simmons
Curtis Thomas Simmons signed with the Philadelphia Phillies for a $65,000 bonus in 1947, one of the highest signing bonuses paid at the time, and made his major-league debut that September at age 18. A hard-throwing lefty, he became, alongside Robin Roberts, one of the twin aces of the 1950 "Whiz Kids," going 17-8 to help the Phillies capture their second National League pennant of the 20th century — but a Korean War call-up in September 1950 cost him a roster spot as the Yankees swept Philadelphia in the World Series. He returned from military service in 1952 to lead the NL in shutouts and make the first of three All-Star teams (1952, 1953, 1957). This 1960 Topps card catches him in his final season as a Phillie: released in May 1960, he signed with St. Louis three days later and revived his career, winning 18 games in 1964 and starting for the champion Cardinals in that year's World Series against the Yankees. Hank Aaron and Stan Musial each called him the toughest pitcher they faced. He retired with 193 wins and 1,697 strikeouts over 20 big-league seasons.
