1960 Topps #452 Ray Webster

About Ray Webster
Raymond George Webster grew up in Browns Valley, California, and signed with the Pacific Coast League's Sacramento Solons out of Marysville High School. After hitting .244 there in 1958, Cleveland selected him in the Rule 5 draft. His major-league debut came April 17, 1959, pinch-hitting with the bases loaded; three weeks later he delivered a three-run pinch-hit homer off Billy Loes that nearly rallied the Indians past Baltimore. He hit .203 in 40 games as Billy Martin's backup at second base. On January 8, 1960, while serving six months in the Army at Fort Dix, Cleveland traded him to Boston for reliever Leo Kiely. Webster reported to spring training in March, made the club, and appeared in seven games before Boston optioned him out on May 15 — his final big-league appearance. This 1960 Topps card, issued right after the trade, is his only card as a Red Sox player. He later called sharing a clubhouse with Ted Williams the highlight of his brief big-league career. Webster played four more minor-league seasons before retiring in 1962 to build a long career in insurance sales.
