1960 Topps #364 Paul Foytack

About Paul Foytack
Paul Eugene Foytack, a right-handed pitcher out of Scranton, Pennsylvania, signed with the Tigers as a free agent in 1949 after leading Scranton Technical High School to a state championship. He spent four years in Detroit's farm system before his first big-league trial in 1953, sticking with the Tigers for good in 1955. From 1956 through 1959 he was a durable mid-rotation workhorse, winning 15, 14, 15, and 14 games while topping 200 innings each season and leading the American League with 37 games started in 1959. His 1960 Topps card, #364, catches him the year Detroit's rotation began turning over. He finished his career with the Los Angeles Angels, closing an 11-year, 86-87 record on July 31, 1963, when he became the first pitcher in major-league history to surrender home runs to four consecutive batters — a distinction matched only once since, in 2007. Foytack later pitched a season in Japan for the Chunichi Dragons before retiring to sell plastics in the Detroit area.
