About Raul Sanchez
Raúl Guadalupe Sánchez Rodríguez, a skinny, hard-throwing right-hander out of Marianao, Cuba, broke into the majors with the Washington Senators on April 17, 1952, debuting at age 21 and tossing a shutout in one of his two career starts. After several years pitching in the minors and in Cuba — including a stint with the 1954 Havana Sugar Kings — he resurfaced with the Cincinnati Redlegs in 1957, logging career highs across the board: 38 games, three wins, five saves and 37 strikeouts over 62.1 innings out of the bullpen. Teammates and fans back home knew him as "Salivita" ("a little saliva"), a nod to his reputation for sneaking a spitball past hitters. His 1960 Topps card, issued during his final big-league season, catches him with the Reds; he made his last major-league appearance that May 17 against the Giants, closing out a three-season career worth a 5-3 record, 4.62 ERA and 48 strikeouts. Sánchez died in 2002 in Pembroke Pines, Florida, at 71.
