About Frank Malzone

Frank Malzone grew up in the Bronx, a Yankees fan who was signed off the sandlots of Samuel Gompers High School by Red Sox bird-dog scout Cy Phillips in 1947. After a broken ankle nearly ended his career at Scranton and a two-year hitch in the Army, he stuck for good with Boston in 1957, taking over at third base and hitting .292 with a career-high 103 RBIs. That year he won the American League's first-ever Gold Glove at third base and finished runner-up for Rookie of the Year; he added two more Gold Gloves in 1958-59 and earned eight All-Star selections between 1957 and 1964, including both games in the two-per-year format of 1959 and 1960. His best all-around season came in 1962 (.283, 21 HR, 95 RBI). He closed out his playing career with the 1966 Angels, finishing with a .274 average, 133 home runs and 728 RBIs, then spent decades as a Red Sox scout and consultant. His 1960 All-Star honors are reflected on card #557 in the Sport Magazine subset, alongside his base card #310, both issued in that year's short-printed high-number series.
