About Bob Hale
Robert Houston Hale broke into the majors with the Baltimore Orioles on July 4, 1955, and put together a strong rookie showing, batting .357 in 67 games. A left-handed-hitting first baseman, he settled into a reserve and pinch-hitting role over five seasons in Baltimore before being placed on waivers and claimed by Cleveland for 1960 -- the season pictured on his Topps card. He delivered his best full year off the bench for the Indians, hitting .300 with 12 RBI in 70 games, almost entirely as a pinch hitter. Hale opened 1961 back with Cleveland before the Yankees purchased him that July. He closed his career on October 1, 1961, singling in his final at-bat off Tracy Stallard in the game where Roger Maris hit his 61st home run. New York went on to win the World Series that October, though Hale did not appear. He finished with a .273 average over seven big-league seasons.
