About Dick Hall

Richard Wallace Hall broke into pro ball out of Swarthmore College, a five-sport letterman who signed with Branch Rickey's Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952. He debuted as an outfielder, starting 84 games in the Pittsburgh outfield in 1954, before a poor bat forced a shift to the mound. After winning 18 games and Pacific Coast League MVP honors with Salt Lake City in 1959, he was traded to the Kansas City Athletics that December. His 1960 Topps card, #308, captures him in that lone Kansas City season, when he started 28 games and worked 182⅓ innings for a last-place club. Dealt to Baltimore in 1961, Hall became a relief specialist nicknamed "Turkey" for his unusual, ungainly pitching motion, pairing with Hoyt Wilhelm and later Stu Miller in one of baseball's great bullpens. A pinpoint control artist who once retired 28 straight batters, he helped the Orioles win the 1966 and 1970 World Series, pitched effectively into his 40s, and was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1989.
