About Red Wilson
Robert James Wilson grew up in Milwaukee, where his auburn hair earned him the nickname "Red." A two-sport standout at Wisconsin, he won Big Ten MVP honors as a senior end in 1949 and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, but chose baseball, signing with the White Sox. After debuting in 1951, he was traded to Detroit in 1954 and spent seven seasons as the Tigers' primary catcher, becoming Frank Lary's personal battery mate — the pair went 16-3 against the Yankees, with Wilson hitting .354 in those games, far above his .258 career mark. On July 20, 1958, he caught Jim Bunning's no-hitter at Fenway Park, the same season he batted a career-best .299. Wilson retired after the 1960 expansion draft rather than report to the Angels. This card, #379 in the 1960 Topps high-number run, shows him with Detroit and comes with either a white or gray back — a Series 5 stock variation in which the white-back version is the scarcer find.
