1960 Topps #378 Stu Miller

San Francisco Giants · National League · Base set · Series 5 · Card #378 of 572
White / gray back

Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About Stu Miller

Stu Miller entered pro ball through a 1949 Cardinals tryout in his hometown of Northampton, Massachusetts, signing for a $100 bonus. He debuted with St. Louis in 1952, pitched briefly for the Phillies after a 1956 trade, then joined the Giants that winter for Jim Hearn. Sportswriter Jim Murray joked that Miller threw "three speeds of pitches - slow, slower and reverse"; his signature changeup, compared to a moth or butterfly drifting across the plate, earned him the nickname "the Butterfly Man." Miller led the NL in ERA (2.47) in 1958, his first year with the club in San Francisco, and blossomed into a top reliever by 1961, tying for the NL saves lead with 17 and making his only All-Star team. He won the July 11, 1961 All-Star Game at Candlestick Park, remembered for an exaggerated tale that a wind gust blew him off the mound during a balk. Traded to Baltimore after the Giants' 1962 pennant, he closed for the 1966 World Series champion Orioles. This 1960 Topps Giants card, #378, comes from the scarce high-number Series 5 print run and is known with either white or gray card-stock backs, the white variety being the tougher find.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
