About Roger Maris
Roger Maris began his pro career in the Cleveland Indians' system at Fargo-Moorhead in 1953, reaching the majors in 1957 and moving to the Kansas City Athletics a year later. A December 1959 trade sent him to the Yankees, and he made an immediate impact - winning back-to-back American League MVP awards in 1960 and 1961, a Gold Glove in 1960, and leading the AL in RBI both seasons, the run that produced his rookie Yankees card, #377 here, issued in both white- and gray-back Series 5 print runs, the white scarcer. In 1961 Maris chased and passed Babe Ruth's single-season home run record, hitting his 61st on the season's final day; the mark stood as the AL record until 2022. He helped New York to five straight pennants and titles in 1961 and 1962, then won a third championship with the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals. His Sport Magazine All-Star selection, card #565, sits among this set's short-printed high numbers (#507-572). Maris finished with 275 home runs over 12 seasons; the Yankees retired his No. 9, but though he drew Hall of Fame consideration for years, he was never elected.
