Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.
About Johnny Briggs
Jonathan Tift Briggs broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 1956 after starring in the low minors, leading the Class A Western International League in strikeouts and ERA for the 1954 Salem Senators. Cleveland acquired the right-hander in a January 1959 waiver deal, and after a strong Triple-A season with San Diego, 1960 became Briggs's only full big-league campaign: he worked 21 games for the Indians, almost entirely in relief, going 4-2 with a save before Cleveland sold his contract to the Kansas City Athletics that July. His 1960 Topps card, number 376, catches him in that lone full season with Cleveland; it's a Series 5 print issued on either white or gray card stock, with the white-back version the tougher find today. That winter Briggs was traded to Cincinnati for veteran left-hander Joe Nuxhall but never pitched for the Reds, closing out his career in Triple-A in 1962. He finished 9-11 with an even 80 strikeouts over parts of five major-league seasons.
