Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.
About Dale Long
Richard Dale Long broke into pro ball with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1943, then began in earnest with Cincinnati's system in 1945, logging eleven minor-league seasons — including a Pacific Coast League MVP year in 1953 — before sticking with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1956 the left-handed slugger authored the streak that defined his career, homering in eight straight games from May 19–28, a major-league record later matched by Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr. That season also brought his lone All-Star nod and career highs of 27 home runs and 91 RBIs. Traded to the Cubs in May 1957, Long hit 55 homers over two-plus seasons in Chicago and, at Wrigley Field on August 20 and September 21, 1958, became the majors' first left-handed catcher since 1902. His ninth-inning pinch-hit single for the Yankees in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series tied the score at 9–9, just before Bill Mazeroski's walk-off homer won it for Pittsburgh; Long won a ring with New York in 1962. His 1960 Topps card, #375, pictures him with the Cubs and was issued on either white or gray stock — a high-number Series 5 print variation in which the white-back version is scarcer.
