1960 Topps #374 Bob Buhl

About Bob Buhl
Robert Ray Buhl was a hard-throwing right-hander who anchored the Milwaukee Braves' pitching staff alongside Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette from 1953 through 1961, the trio forming one of baseball's best three-man rotations. A Saginaw, Michigan product whose original Chicago White Sox contract was voided by Commissioner Happy Chandler, Buhl signed with the Braves organization in 1948, served two years as an Army paratrooper in Korea, and broke into the majors in 1953. He won 18 games in both 1956 and 1957, then helped Milwaukee beat the Yankees in the 1957 World Series. Buhl earned the nickname "Dodger Killer" after reeling off five straight wins over Brooklyn during the Braves' 1956 pennant chase, and he made both 1960 All-Star Game rosters, the season pictured on this card. Less celebrated with a bat, Buhl went 0-for-70 in 1962, the worst single-season batting mark in major-league history. He finished his 15-year career with 166 wins across the Braves, Cubs, and Phillies, retiring in 1967.
