1960 Topps #373 Don Hoak

About Don Hoak
Don Hoak anchored third base for the world champion Pirates pictured on this 1960 Topps card, the hard-nosed third baseman whom Pittsburgh broadcaster Bob Prince nicknamed "Tiger" for his ferocious style of play. Signed by the Dodgers out of the Navy in 1947, Hoak reached the majors in 1954, sharing third base with Jackie Robinson and starting the deciding Game 7 of the 1955 World Series in Robinson's place as Brooklyn beat the Yankees for its only title. After stops in Chicago and Cincinnati, where he earned his lone All-Star nod in 1957, Hoak came to Pittsburgh in a 1959 trade and became a cornerstone of the infield. He hit .282 in 1960, finished second to teammate Dick Groat for NL MVP, and started at third again in Game 7 as the Pirates stunned the Yankees on Bill Mazeroski's homer. Hoak later managed in the Pirates' farm system, dying of a heart attack in 1969 after being passed over for the big-league managing job.
