1965 Topps #357 Carl Warwick

About Carl Warwick
#357 in the fifth series of 1965 Topps puts Warwick back in Cardinals red, issued on the heels of the autumn that made his name. Manager Johnny Keane sent him up five times in the 1964 World Series and he reached base the first four: a sixth-inning single off Al Downing that drove in the go-ahead run in Game One, a single and a run scored off Mel Stottlemyre in Game Two, a walk from Jim Bouton in Game Three, and another single off Downing in Game Four that started the rally Ken Boyer capped with a grand slam. He batted .750 for the Series, the high-water mark of a career this card sits squarely on top of.
Carl Wayne Warwick (1937-2025) was a Dallas-born outfielder who batted right-handed and threw left-handed, a combination rare enough that by 1966 he was the only man in the majors listed that way. He played six big-league seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Colt .45s, Baltimore Orioles, and Chicago Cubs. Warwick played baseball at Texas Christian University and left after his junior year to sign a bonus contract with the Dodgers, then tore up the minors: Texas League MVP in 1959 at Victoria, where he hit .331 and led the league with 35 home runs, 324 total bases, and 129 runs scored, followed by an American Association all-star season at St. Paul in 1960. He debuted for Los Angeles on April 11, 1961, and was traded to St. Louis that May 30 with Bob Lillis for Daryl Spencer. A 1962 deal made him an everyday outfielder for the expansion Colt .45s, and the Cardinals brought him back in February 1964 as a reserve and pinch hitter. That October he reached base in his first four World Series pinch-hit trips as St. Louis beat the Yankees in seven games. He retired with 363 hits, 31 home runs, and a .248 average, and was elected to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
