About Red Schoendienst
Card #556 is Schoendienst's first Topps card as a manager. He got the job when Johnny Keane walked away in the wake of the Cardinals' 1964 World Series title, a championship Schoendienst had shared from the coaching lines. The number puts the card in the 1965 high series, inside the run from #523 to #598 where over half the cards were short printed.
Albert Fred "Red" Schoendienst, known as Red from boyhood for his curly red hair and freckles, was a switch-hitting second baseman who played 19 major league seasons from 1945 to 1963 for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Milwaukee Braves. He made ten All-Star teams and had one of the surest gloves in the National League, retiring with a .289 average, 2,449 hits and 84 home runs. He led the league in steals as a 1945 rookie left fielder, hit a career-best .342 in 1953, won the 1946 World Series with St. Louis and the 1957 title with Milwaukee, then was diagnosed with tuberculosis after the 1958 season and lost part of a lung to surgery in February 1959. Released by the Braves after 1960, he came home to St. Louis and finished as a player-coach through 1963. He coached the 1964 champions, replaced Johnny Keane as manager for 1965, and led the Cardinals to back-to-back pennants in 1967 and 1968, winning the 1967 World Series over Boston and taking National League Manager of the Year honors both seasons. His twelve full seasons at the helm trail only Tony La Russa's in club history. He coached one more championship team in 1982 and reached the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 through the Veterans Committee.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #556 card?
It is card #556 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Red Schoendienst of the St. Louis Cardinals. This is one of the twenty manager cards in the 1965 Topps set - nineteen managers plus #457 Bob Kennedy, the Cubs' head coach in the College of Coaches era.
Is 1965 Topps #556 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
