1971 Topps #673 Gerry Janeski

About Gerry Janeski
A February 9, 1971 trade sent Janeski from the White Sox to Washington for outfielder Rick Reichardt, and he opened the year in Ted Williams's bullpen. The 2 2/3 innings of relief against the Yankees on April 21 produced his only win of 1971. He went 1-5 with a 4.96 ERA over 23 games before being optioned to Triple-A Denver after June 29. His #673 is a rookie card from the sixth series, printed with the Senators.
Gerry Janeski was a right-handed sinkerball pitcher from Pasadena who appeared in 62 major-league games from 1970 to 1972 for the White Sox, Senators and Rangers. The Red Sox signed him out of Cal State Los Angeles in 1965 and kept him in their farm system for five years, where he led the International League with 14 complete games for Louisville in 1969. A March 1970 trade completing the Gary Peters deal sent him to Chicago. He won his debut on April 10 against Milwaukee, going 7 1/3 innings, then threw a three-hit shutout of Oakland in his next start. He finished 10-17 with a 4.77 ERA for a White Sox team that lost 106 games and was named the club's rookie of the year. Chicago writer Jerome Holtzman dubbed him "The Wheat Germ Kid" for his health-food regimen and dietary supplements. After a short return in 1972 he pitched in Triple-A through 1974, then built a career in California real estate.
