1973 Topps #625 Angel Mangual

About Angel Mangual
Mangual's #625 is a high number from the fifth series. His 1973 season brought a .224 average, 3 home runs and 13 RBIs. A fight with Blue Moon Odom over a cassette player and a $200 fine from Dick Williams for throwing his helmet marked the year. He hit .111 in the ALCS against Baltimore and went 0 for 6 in the World Series against the Mets.
Angel Mangual was a Puerto Rican outfielder who played seven seasons in the majors, 1969 to 1976, one with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the rest with the Oakland Athletics. Born in Juana Diaz, he grew up in a family that idolized Roberto Clemente, and the Pirates signed him in 1966 through the scout who had steered them to Clemente. He was nicknamed "Little Clemente." In 1969 he led the Double-A Eastern League with 26 home runs and 102 RBIs, hit .320 and was named the league's MVP. Pittsburgh sent him to Oakland in October 1970 to complete the Mudcat Grant deal. He played for the A's from 1971 and won three World Series rings, 1972 through 1974. His playing time shrank after 1974, and he appeared in his last game on June 20, 1976. He finished with a .245 average, 22 home runs and 125 RBIs in 450 games. His younger brother Pepe Mangual and his cousin Coco Laboy also reached the majors.
