1973 Topps #274 Darold Knowles

About Darold Knowles
Oakland used Knowles in 54 relief appearances covering 65 2/3 innings in 1972. His Athletics card, #274, arrived in the third series of 1973 Topps. In 1973 he made 5 starts alongside 47 relief appearances. On August 14 against Boston, he pitched the only complete game and shutout of his major league career.
Darold Knowles pitched sixteen major-league seasons for seven franchises, making 765 appearances and recording 143 saves with a 3.12 ERA. The left-hander reached 71 appearances and 27 saves for Washington in 1970. With Oakland he became the first pitcher to appear in all seven games of a World Series, saving Games 1 and 7 against the Mets in 1973. He finished that Series with 6 1/3 innings and no earned runs, retiring Wayne Garrett for the final out. After his playing career, Knowles coached pitchers in the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Blue Jays organizations, including eight years as a roving instructor for St. Louis. He was inducted into the Florida State League Hall of Fame and, in 2012, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
