1973 Topps #563 Larry Haney

About Larry Haney
Larry Haney spent most of 1972 at Honolulu, San Diego's Triple-A club, after Oakland sold his contract to the Padres on May 30. The A's bought him back in September, and he appeared in 5 games with 4 at-bats, but he was not on their postseason roster. His 1973 Topps card is #563, a fifth-series high number, and shows him with the Oakland Athletics.
Larry Haney was a defensive-minded catcher who spent 12 seasons in the majors from 1966 to 1978 as a backup for the Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Pilots, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers. Signed by Baltimore out of high school in Virginia, he made his debut on July 27, 1966 and homered in his second big-league at-bat off Cleveland's John O'Donoghue. Haney's calling card was his glove: a .985 career fielding percentage and an arm that caught 39 percent of attempted base stealers. He was on Oakland's roster for the entire 1974 championship season, appearing in two World Series games as the Athletics beat the Los Angeles Dodgers. Across 480 career games he hit .215 with 12 home runs and 73 RBI. After retiring as a player, Haney spent decades in the Brewers organization as a bullpen coach and pitching coach.
