1973 Topps #382 Mike Hegan

About Mike Hegan
Oakland went 93-62 in 1972 and took Cincinnati in seven World Series games, with Hegan in six of them, mostly as a defensive replacement for first baseman Mike Epstein. His single in Game 5 was his only hit of the Series. He and his father Jim, a member of Cleveland's 1948 champions, became the first father-and-son pair to each win a World Series. His #382 is a third-series card in the 1973 Topps set, printed with Oakland.
Mike Hegan was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder who played twelve major league seasons between 1964 and 1977, all in the American League. The son of longtime Cleveland catcher Jim Hegan, he signed with the New York Yankees in 1961 out of College of the Holy Cross and reached the majors in September 1964, joining that fall's World Series roster as a replacement for the injured Tony Kubek. After parts of three seasons with the Yankees, he was sold to the expansion Seattle Pilots in 1968 and became the new franchise's first player and first home run hitter, earning a 1969 All-Star selection before an injury forced him to withdraw. He moved with the franchise to Milwaukee as the Brewers began play in 1970, and later played for the Oakland Athletics, winning a World Series ring with the club in 1972, before finishing his career back with the Brewers in 1977. Over 966 games he batted .242 with 53 home runs. After retiring as a player he spent twelve seasons as a Brewers television color commentator, then worked Indians games on radio and television from 1989 through the 2011 season.
