About 1974 World Series Game 1
Card #461 opens the 1974 World Series subset with the October 12 opener at Dodger Stadium, where Oakland's bid for a third straight championship began against the 102-win Los Angeles Dodgers. The A's had beaten Baltimore in the ALCS while the Dodgers ousted Pittsburgh in the NLCS, setting up the first all-California Fall Classic. Reggie Jackson gave starter Ken Holtzman an early lead with a second-inning home run off Andy Messersmith, and Bert Campaneris's fifth-inning squeeze bunt scored Holtzman for a 2-0 edge. Rollie Fingers took over in relief and worked into the ninth, picking up the win as Oakland tacked on an unearned run in the eighth off a Ron Cey throwing error. Jimmy Wynn's two-out, ninth-inning home run pulled Los Angeles within one, but Catfish Hunter closed it out and the Athletics escaped with a 3-2 victory to open the Series.
