About '74 N.L. Championships
Los Angeles ended an eight-year absence from the postseason by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates three games to one in the 1974 National League Championship Series, clinching the Dodgers' first pennant since 1966. Don Sutton anchored the staff, throwing a four-hit shutout to open the series in Pittsburgh and closing it out by allowing just one run over eight innings in the clincher. Pittsburgh avoided the sweep in Game 3, as Willie Stargell and Richie Hebner both homered in a 7-0 rout at Dodger Stadium, but Los Angeles answered in Game 4: Steve Garvey, that year's NL MVP, hit two home runs and drove in four runs as the Dodgers scored in six of eight innings for a 12-1 victory, the largest series-game margin in NLCS history at the time. Los Angeles advanced to face Oakland in the first all-California World Series, which the two-time defending champion Athletics won in five games.
