About '74 A.L. Championships
Card #459 opens the 1975 Topps postseason subset with the 1974 ALCS, a rematch of the previous year's series with Oakland's third straight pennant at stake. Baltimore won Game 1 in Oakland, 6-3, with home runs from Paul Blair, Brooks Robinson, and Bobby Grich chasing Catfish Hunter early. The A's answered by taking the next three: Ken Holtzman shut out the Orioles 5-0 in Game 2, and Vida Blue outdueled Jim Palmer 1-0 in Game 3, a two-hitter decided by a Sal Bando home run. Game 4 turned on control — Mike Cuellar walked nine Orioles and still hadn't allowed a hit when he was pulled, but a bases-loaded walk forced in a run in the fifth, and Reggie Jackson's double drove home Bando in the seventh. Rollie Fingers relieved Hunter and struck out Don Baylor to strand the tying run, clinching a 2-1 win and Oakland's third straight AL pennant en route to a third consecutive World Series title over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
