1975 Topps #458 Ross Grimsley

About Ross Grimsley
Ross Albert Grimsley Jr., a left-hander out of Frayser High School in Memphis, was Cincinnati's first-round pick (17th overall) in the 1969 draft and reached the majors in 1971. He anchored the Reds' 1972 pennant-winning rotation, going 14-8 in the regular season and 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA as the Reds fell to Oakland in the World Series. Traded to Baltimore after 1973, Grimsley went 18-13 with a career-high 39 starts as the Orioles won the 1974 AL East — the season pictured on his 1975 Topps card (#458). He signed with Montreal as a free agent in 1978 and had his best season, going 20-11 with three shutouts, an All-Star selection, and a seventh-place finish in NL Cy Young voting. Grimsley closed his career back in Baltimore in 1982, finishing 124-99 with 750 strikeouts. Teammates called him "Scuz" for pitching through winning streaks without a haircut or shower, and in 1975 he was sued in the landmark Manning v. Grimsley case after a warmup toss injured a heckling fan at Fenway Park.
