About Bill Parsons

William Raymond Parsons was born August 17, 1948, in Riverside, California, and starred in baseball and basketball at Riverside Polytechnic High School before pitching at the University of Utah and Riverside City College. The Seattle Pilots drafted him in the seventh round in 1968, and he broke into the Brewers' rotation — the franchise the Pilots became — in 1971. His rookie season was a revelation: a 13-17 record, 3.20 ERA, and four shutouts over 244⅔ innings, good for second in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Chris Chambliss and The Sporting News' AL Rookie Pitcher of the Year award. He followed with a solid 13-13 mark in 1972, but a sore shoulder derailed 1973. Traded to Oakland for Deron Johnson in 1974, Parsons made just four relief appearances totaling two scoreless innings — his final major-league work, captured on this 1975 Topps card before he was dealt to the Cardinals that December and, the following July, to the White Sox, without ever pitching in the majors again.
