1975 Topps #645 Danny Cater

About Danny Cater
Danny Anderson Cater signed with the Philadelphia Phillies out of an Austin high school in 1958 and reached the majors in 1964. A first baseman who also played third base and outfield, he spent twelve seasons with the Phillies, White Sox, Athletics, Yankees, Red Sox, and Cardinals, batting .276 with 1,229 hits. His finest season came in 1968's "Year of the Pitcher," when he finished runner-up in the AL batting race at .290 - ten points behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a title - while leading AL first basemen in fielding percentage. Soft-spoken at the plate, Cater was nicknamed "Texas Tenor" by teammates for his high-pitched voice. New York's 1972 trade sending him to Boston for reliever Sparky Lyle, who blossomed into a Cy Young winner with the Yankees, is remembered as one of the most lopsided deals of the era. This 1975 Topps card, #645, pictures him with the Red Sox in the last of his twelve big-league seasons, closed out with the Cardinals.
