About Bill Fahey
William Roger Fahey was born June 14, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up idolizing the hometown Tigers. The Washington Senators made him the No. 1 pick of the 1970 January secondary draft, and manager Ted Williams predicted the 20-year-old catcher would be "the American League All-Star catcher in 1975." Injuries derailed that timeline — five broken ribs and a punctured lung in a 1973 home-plate collision, then a broken nose in spring training — and Jim Sundberg's rise left Fahey as Texas's backup. His 1975 Topps card (#644) catches him with the Rangers in the year Williams forecast stardom; Fahey hit .297 in a reserve role and later needled, "I proved him wrong." He caught 11 major-league seasons for the Senators/Rangers (1971–72, 1974–77), Padres (1979–80) and Tigers (1981–83), hitting a career-best .287 for San Diego in 1979. In a 1982 game, his throw on a pitchout gunned down Rickey Henderson at second, halting Henderson's pursuit of Lou Brock's stolen-base record. He finished a .241 hitter with 7 homers and 83 RBIs in 383 games.
