1975 Topps #643 Brent Strom

About Brent Strom
Brent Terry Strom, a left-hander out of San Diego High School and USC, where he helped the Trojans win two NCAA championships, was drafted twice without signing before the New York Mets took him third overall in 1970. He debuted in the majors in 1972, was traded to Cleveland for 1973, then landed in San Diego to complete an earlier deal. Pictured with the Padres on his 1975 Topps card (#643), Strom had his best season that year, going 8-8 with a 2.54 ERA -- second on the staff only to Randy Jones -- and followed it by leading the club with 103 strikeouts in 1976. His playing career ended in 1977, and after his release in 1978 he became just the second pitcher, after Tommy John, to undergo the elbow-reconstruction surgery that bears John's name. Strom went on to a long second career as a pitching coach, most notably guiding the Houston Astros' staff to the 2017 World Series championship.
