About Dave Goltz

Dave Goltz grew up in Rothsay, Minnesota, a four-sport prep star who signed with the Twins out of high school in 1967. An arm injury and a year of Army Reserve duty slowed his climb through the minors, but he reached Minnesota in July 1972, called up when Jim Kaat broke his hand, and won his first big-league start against Milwaukee. By the time of this 1975 Topps card, Goltz was anchoring the Twins' rotation, posting identical 14-14 records in 1975 and 1976 before breaking out in 1977 with a 20-11 season and a league-leading 303 innings, tying for the American League wins crown and sharing the Twins' 1978 yearbook cover with MVP Rod Carew. A free agent after 1979, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and earned a World Series ring in 1981, working 3 1/3 relief innings as LA beat the Yankees. He finished his twelve-year career with the California Angels in 1983, going 113-109 with a 3.69 ERA over 2,039 2/3 innings.
