About Ed Figueroa

Eduardo Figueroa Padilla signed with the Mets out of Puerto Rico in 1966, but a torn arm and a hitch in the Marine Corps — including a stint in Vietnam — nearly ended his career before it began. He resurfaced with the Giants organization in 1970, and a 1973 trade to the Angels finally opened a big-league door. Figueroa debuted for California in 1974, then broke out in 1975, pictured here on his rookie card, going 16-13 with a 2.91 ERA for a last-place club that scored just 628 runs all season. A December 1975 trade sent him to the Yankees, where he became the staff's top winner across three straight pennants from 1976 to 1978 and two World Series titles. In 1978 he went 20-9, becoming the first Puerto Rican-born pitcher to win 20 games in a major-league season, a distinction he still holds alone. Elbow trouble ended his run by 1981, closing out an eight-year career at 80-67 with a 3.51 ERA.
