About Darrell Evans
Darrell Wayne Evans signed with the Kansas City Athletics out of Pasadena City College in 1967, then reached the Atlanta Braves via the Rule 5 draft after Oakland left him unprotected. He won the starting third-base job in 1971, with former Braves All-Star Eddie Mathews personally drilling him out of the early fielding troubles that earned him the nickname "Clank." Evans broke out in 1973, blasting 41 home runs and leading the National League with 124 walks to make his first All-Star team. This 1975 Topps card, #475, captures him mid-career with Atlanta, the season before his trade to San Francisco. He made a second All-Star squad with the Giants in 1983, then signed with Detroit as a free agent and won the 1984 World Series in his first year there. In 1985, at 38, he led the American League with 40 home runs — the oldest home run champion in history and the first player to top a league in homers in both leagues. He retired with 414 career homers and a .361 on-base percentage, leading Bill James to call him the most underrated player in baseball history.
