1975 Topps #474 Luke Walker

About Luke Walker
James Luke Walker, a left-handed pitcher from De Kalb, Texas, debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in September 1965 after playing at Paris Junior College. Over nine seasons (1965-66, 1968-74) he worked as both a starter and reliever, spending eight years in Pittsburgh before Detroit acquired him in a December 1973 trade. His best season came in 1970, when he went 15-6 with a 3.04 ERA as the Pirates won the NL East. The next July he carried a no-hitter into the ninth against the Dodgers before Joe Ferguson's leadoff home run broke it up, settling for a one-hit shutout. In the 1971 World Series, which Pittsburgh won over Baltimore in seven games, Walker started Game Four and threw the first pitch of the first night game in Series history. That New Year's Eve, he asked to join Roberto Clemente on the relief flight to Nicaragua; Clemente sent him home to enjoy San Juan instead, a decision that spared his life when the plane crashed. Walker closed out his career with Detroit in 1974, appearing on card #474 in the 1975 Topps set, and finished 45-47 with a 3.65 ERA and 558 strikeouts.
