About Ken McMullen

Ken McMullen broke in with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a 20-year-old September call-up in 1962, signed straight out of Oxnard High School in his California hometown. The right-handed-hitting third baseman struggled to win the job in Los Angeles, and after 1964 he was dealt to Washington in a nine-player, Frank Howard-headlined trade for Claude Osteen. The move launched his career: over five-plus seasons with the Senators he became one of the American League's premier defensive third basemen, leading AL third sackers in total chances from 1967-69 and setting a league record with 11 assists in a 1966 game. He batted a career-high .272 with 87 RBIs in 1969. Traded to California in 1970 and back to Los Angeles after 1972, McMullen spent his last Dodgers season, 1975, mostly as a pinch hitter, highlighted by a pinch-hit grand slam, before finishing out in Oakland and Milwaukee. He earned a World Series ring with the '63 Dodgers, sidelined from the Series itself by a hamstring injury.
