About Bruce Dal Canton

Bruce Dal Canton's path to the majors began in a classroom: while teaching high school in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, he was discovered by Pittsburgh Pirates scout Rex Bowen, who signed him in 1966. The right-hander debuted with Pittsburgh in 1967 and worked 11 big-league seasons as both a starter and reliever for the Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago White Sox, finishing 51-49 with a 3.67 ERA and 485 strikeouts. Traded to Kansas City in December 1970, he spent parts of five seasons with the Royals, the club pictured on his 1975 Topps card, and led the American League in wild pitches (16) in 1974, throwing a knuckleball he'd learned from teammate Wilbur Wood, before a midseason trade sent him to Atlanta. His lasting legacy came afterward: as the Braves' major league pitching coach from 1987-1990 he helped mold John Smoltz and Tom Glavine into stars, and he spent a decade coaching the Myrtle Beach Pelicans before his 2008 death from esophageal cancer, honored with a Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame induction and a Pelicans clubhouse named for him.
