About Bob Stinson
Gorrell Robert Stinson III was born October 11, 1945, in Elkin, North Carolina. Drafted out of Miami Senior High School by the Kansas City Athletics and Washington Senators without signing, the switch-hitting catcher was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers 15th overall in the June 1966 secondary phase out of Miami-Dade Community College, and debuted with the Dodgers on September 23, 1969. Traded to St. Louis with Ted Sizemore for Dick Allen after 1970, he moved through Houston, Montreal and Kansas City as a backup, appearing in two games of the 1976 ALCS, before the expansion Seattle Mariners drafted him that November. Stinson caught Seattle's first-ever game on April 6, 1977, and became the club's primary catcher, setting career highs in 1978 with a .258 average, 11 home runs and 55 RBI. His 1975 Topps card (#471) shows him with the Expos, the stop just before Kansas City and his defining Seattle years. He finished in 1980 with a .250 average, 33 homers and 180 RBI over 652 games.
