About Tom Hutton
Thomas George Hutton signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers out of South Pasadena High School in 1964 and twice won minor-league MVP honors before Los Angeles traded him to the Philadelphia Phillies for Larry Hisle in October 1971. The left-handed first baseman got brief big-league trials in 1966 and 1969 before settling in as Philadelphia's reserve first baseman, emergency outfielder, and left-handed pinch hitter from 1972 through 1977 - the run captured on his 1975 Topps card - helping the Phillies to NL East titles in 1976 and 1977. He hit .309 as a pinch hitter in his final Phillies season before Philadelphia sold his contract to Toronto that December, then closed his career with the Blue Jays and Montreal Expos, finishing in 1981 with a .248 average over 952 games. Hutton was best known for owning Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, a .320 hitter against him, and for never being hit by a pitch in 1,920 plate appearances. He went on to become a longtime Miami Marlins broadcaster.
