1975 Topps #478 Tom Burgmeier

About Tom Burgmeier
Thomas Henry Burgmeier, a left-handed reliever from St. Paul, Minnesota, signed with the Houston Colt .45's in 1961 out of Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, where he threw three no-hitters as a senior. Released by Houston, he resurfaced with the Los Angeles Angels and debuted in the majors on April 10, 1968. Kansas City took him in the 1968 expansion draft, and he formed one of the American League's top bullpen duos with submariner Ted Abernathy in the Royals' pen before Minnesota traded for him in October 1973. Burgmeier's 1975 Topps card catches him midway through his four seasons as a Twin (1974-77), when he and Bill Campbell formed what The Sporting News dubbed the "Bicentennial Bullpen." He later starred for Boston, setting the Red Sox record for saves by a left-hander (24) in 1980 and earning his only All-Star selection. He closed out his 17-year career with Oakland in 1984, finishing with 79 wins, 102 saves and a 3.23 ERA over 745 games.
