About Elias Sosa
Elías Sosa Martínez signed with the San Francisco Giants out of Bonao, Dominican Republic, in 1968 for a $2,000 bonus, inked by scout Horacio Martínez, the same bird dog who had brought in Juan Marichal. Sosa modeled his high-kick delivery on Marichal, his boyhood idol and eventual teammate. After debuting in September 1972, the sinker-slider righty broke out in 1973, finishing third in NL Rookie of the Year voting on career highs of 10 wins, 18 saves, and 71 games. That December the Giants dealt him to St. Louis, where he opened 1975 as the Cardinals' bullpen muscle before a May trade sent him to Atlanta. He later pitched for the Dodgers, Athletics, Expos, Tigers, and Padres, reaching the 1977 World Series with Los Angeles, where he surrendered the second of Reggie Jackson's three home runs in Game Six. Sosa retired in 1983 with a 59-51 record, 83 saves, and a 3.32 ERA across 601 games.
