About Glenn Abbott
Glenn Abbott's 1975 Topps card (#591) captures him with an Oakland Athletics club that had just won three straight World Series; Abbott, who debuted in 1973, was part of the 1974 championship team. A 6-foot-6 right-hander from North Little Rock, Arkansas, he was Oakland's eighth-round pick in the 1969 draft and reached the majors on July 29, 1973, against Texas. He went 13-16 with a 4.08 ERA over four Oakland seasons, 45 of them starts. Later in 1975, on the season's final day, Abbott retired the side in order in the sixth inning between starter Vida Blue and finishers Paul Lindblad and Rollie Fingers, forming the first four-pitcher combined no-hitter in major-league history. Selected by Seattle in the 1976 expansion draft, he became the Mariners' first workhorse starter, twice leading the staff in wins and opening three separate seasons on the mound; broadcaster Dave Niehaus nicknamed him the "Tall Arkansan." Abbott closed his 11-year playing career with Detroit in 1984, then spent decades as a respected minor-league pitching coach.
